Scalable and robust infrastructure that lets you ship fast.

Hi. I'm Will.

I partner with engineering teams and technical leaders to navigate complex infrastructure challenges — without sacrificing what you're building toward.

Will Moss

Foresight and guidance — so you can move fast without compromising the future.

I advise and consult for companies, partnering with technical leaders and teams to navigate challenging problems and uncover critical technical tradeoffs. I provide the foresight and guidance needed for you to move quickly toward immediate goals without sacrificing long-term success. I can also lead execution on select projects.

My approach is grounded in your product goals, not just the technical ones. I work to ensure the architecture enables fast shipping today while leaving room for the growth and product needs you'll face tomorrow — so the foundation you build now doesn't slow you down later.

I've done this with engineering teams of 3 to 3,000. If you feel like my experience matches what your company needs, let me know.

What I've
Done

  • Led the Infrastructure Team at Watershed
  • Built out Watershed's multiregion strategy and delivered the second region in Europe to meet European clients' data residency requirements
  • Intermittently the only Senior Staff Engineer in Airbnb's Homes business as the team grew from 50 to 500
  • Homes representative to a three-person team that designed the next-generation architecture after SOA
  • Helped bring Airbnb's new CTO and his senior architects up to speed technically when they joined
  • Lead Homes engineer for Airbnb's move to a service-oriented architecture — designed overall architecture and reviewed all new service designs
  • Redesigned the Homes Search infrastructure and led the team implementing it
  • Designed and built Airbnb's first experimentation platform in 2014, before experimentation was cool
  • Part of the early two-person infrastructure team at Bump, scaling all backend systems from 5 million to over 130 million users in three years

Ways of Working

Individual Architecture Review & Mentorship

Working closely with anyone from a senior engineer leading a large project to a CTO needing a collaborator on technical decisions. I evaluate future directions, define projects, and review existing designs — through whiteboarding, design document reviews, and key meetings. The engagement is flexible in duration, and I can also help with hiring and interview design.

2–5 hours / week

Team Mentorship & Execution

Like Individual Review, but focused on providing leadership for a team that lacks a dedicated technical lead. I meet with the team, review design docs, attend meetings, and mentor engineers — with a more hands-on role including PR reviews and coding complex components. Think of it as a fractional Tech Lead, where your senior engineers retain long-term accountability. Can also help with hiring.

5–10 hours / week

Project Ownership & Execution

I own the execution of a project from technical design through coding and deployment — solo or with a small team. These need to be the kinds of problems that don't have easy solutions and require deep investigation to uncover the best path forward. I'm not interested in being added horsepower; I'm interested in the hard problems.

10–20 hours / week
